GAS supplies have been restored to 4500 householders in Keith and Huntly following a major outage yesterday.

Supplier SGN says it has now resolved the issue with the network – the second loss of supplies for residents within weeks after they were left without gas for nearly two days in freezing early February.

People in the towns woke up on Friday morning to find no gas supply once again.

By yesterday evening gas supplies had been restored to Keith's Weston View and Glenisla care homes, and Huntly's Jubilee Hospital and Balhousie care home.

However, the vast majority of affected customers were left without gas overnight.

Engineers worked through the night to get supplies back on for everyone by this morning.

An SGN spokesperson said it was now safe for residents to start using gas again.

The company is delivering a letter to each affected property today with instructions on how to safely turn their gas back on.

The spokesperson said: "Thank you to everyone in Huntly and Keith for your patience while you’ve been without gas.

"We know it’s not been easy and we’re extremely sorry for the disruption you’ve experienced."
