Four Aberdeenshire groups are to receive a share of council cash following approval from councillors.

The causes applied to the Garioch area initiative fund in a bid to receive support for their ongoing projects.

Members of the Garioch area committee considered and unanimously approved the applications on Tuesday.

Strathburn Parent Council will get £2000 to make improvements to its front reception area and early years playground.

The school’s Eco/Sustainability group have raised beds and planters but they are currently empty.

Their share of the cash will go towards buying bulbs and seeds, and they also plan to buy a storage shed, compost and plant foods.

The group hope to grow their own fruit and vegetables so they can cook with them and share the produce with residents living in sheltered housing.

The project will also go towards securing the school’s next Eco Flag.

The Garioch Sports Centre will host sessions for local teenagers.

Inverurie’s Garioch Sports Centre will receive £1000 to set up a Diversionary Project for teenagers living in the town.

The project would provide teens with a safe, inclusive, fun and welcoming environment to meet up with their friends.

An eight-week pilot project will run on Friday evenings between 7pm and 9pm.

Staff at the sports centre will offer sport and other activity sessions with a focus on healthy eating and living a balanced lifestyle.

It is hoped that the project will reduce youth crime in the town.

Garioch Sports Centre is “positive” that the pilot project can move forward and become something available to teens all year round.

Meanwhile Westhill & Elrick Community Council made two applications.

They will be awarded £5000 to upgrade a section of path along the Westhill Orbital Route.

The area at Lawsondale Woods can flood and become slippery after heavy rain so the path will be resurfaced and widened to allow all users to enjoy the space.

The community council will also get £950 to buy sheds to store the town’s Christmas lights and gardening equipment.

Finally Inverurie Community Energy Society Ltd will be given £3500 to raise the profile of the Garioch District Heat Project.

Its share of the fund will be used to deliver an online social media campaign and in-person events.
