A Fraserburgh woman has won £250 for simply binning her rubbish as part of a new initiative that aims to tackle the looming litter emergency.

Mum of four Angela Breward won the money after submitting a photo via the LitterLotto app.

Environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful, and LitterLotto, the behaviour change app, launched a partnership earlier this month, to encourage more people to bin their litter and offers weekly prizes ranging from £50 to £500.

This venture is one of the many ways Keep Scotland Beautiful is tackling the scourge of rubbish in communities.

A national poll conducted by the environmental charity earlier this year highlights that two thirds of people perceive that litter is an issue in their local area, and 87 per cent believe that it is an issue across Scotland.

Angela said: “It does drive me crazy when I see litter. You head to a nice beauty spot and there’s litter flying about.

“I saw an advert for the LitterLotto and I thought: ‘What a great idea!’”

Angela’s four children were also involved and helped her submit her photo.

She added: “The kids all do it, they all help me take the photos on the app.”

Asked if she’ll be splitting the money with her helpful kids, Angela laughed and said: “Of course!”

She said: “It’s a good cause whether there’s a monetary reward or not, it’s something that everyone should do.

“Locally, where we live in our little village community, they do a litter pick every so often.

“They all go out with litter grabbers and black bags and it’s a great sight to see kids, pensioners and everyone getting involved."

Catherine Gee, Keep Scotland Beautiful’s deputy chief executive, said: “It’s brilliant to have Angela as the first winner following the launch of our partnership with LitterLotto last month.

“This collaboration is all about encouraging people to help tackle the country’s litter issue and it’s great to see Angela’s kids were also involved.

“I’m looking forward to seeing many more Scottish winners being rewarded for helping to keep Scotland beautiful.”

A spokeswoman for LitterLotto said: “It's great to see our Scottish users benefiting from this regional jackpot.

“We hope that our partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful will encourage others to get involved.

“Our users help keep their communities clean and green and with LitterLotto you can win cash while doing good.”

The LitterLotto app is available to download for free on the App Store and Android Store.
