Lifelong railway enthusiast Des Byrne was the latest guest speaker at Garioch Heritage Society.

He brought to life the complicated communication systems operating on the lines all over Britain at the meeting in the heritage centre in Inverurie.

He covered semaphore signals; gantry signals; and various lamps for different freight, points, junctions, sidings and signal boxes. They all had a life and language of their own.

Des is a past chairman of Maud Railway Museum of which he is justifiably proud.

Former Inverurie Locomotive Works employee Charlie Milne gave the vote of thanks at the end of the meeting.
