Firefighters blaze charity trail around golf course

FIREFIGHTERS in Keith have bagged a £6,000 boost for charity.

And the team at the retained station swapped their emergency gear for golf attire to do it.

The station organised a Texas Scramble golf day at Keith Golf Club on Saturday, June 3.

This was the first time they have staged a golf event and Watch Commander Kevin Mitchell said they were delighted by its success.

"We have done car washes before but a couple of guys play golf and they thought it would be a good idea," he said.

It turned out to be more than a good idea, and was a rousing success with 24 teams of four players taking part.

That included two teams of firefighters from the Keith and Huntly stations.

Local businesses donated prizes for a raffle, and with entry fees and other donations added, the final total came to £6,037.33

The main beneficiary will be the Firefighters Charity, and up to four local charities will also share in the windfall.

"We have already started planning for next year," added Kevin.

Local DJ Scott McWilliam, a brother of one of the firefighters, donated his fee to the charity pot, and caterer Whyte's Bites also made a donation from its proceeds. Keith Golf Club gave the organising team a discount on green fees for the day.

The winners were captained by the appropriately named Davie Rough, whose team clearly avoided most of the rough on the course in amassing 12 birdies between them.
