A SIX-YEAR-OLD bike fanatic is going way beyond the extra mile to boost a breast cancer charity.

Lewis Mackay, from Keith, has raised more than £6000 for Breast Cancer Now this month – decimating his original target of £250 when he set off to cover 100 miles on his new bike throughout June.

The youngster reached the 100-mile mark last week – and decided to keep on pedalling.

He has now doubled his target to 200 miles, and aims to finish his challenge this Sunday, June 28. He has notched up 160 miles so far.

Lewis will be joined by dad Kyle and mum Lisa, grannies, grandas, uncles and aunties for his last cycle leg out at Netherton Farm, on the outskirts of Keith.

His auntie, Trisha Davidson, is a well-known local fundraiser for Breast Cancer Now. What would have been the 11th year of her popular annual strawberry tea at Netherton was called off due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event attracts people from around the north-east and has amassed more than £27,000 for the charity in the past decade.

Lewis mounted his bike effort to support Tricia's alternative fundraiser this year. She has been running a local strawberry tea delivery service as a substitute for the usual Netherton event, which has been very well supported.

Dad Kyle, of Fife Avenue, has been cycling alongside Lewis throughout the challenge. He said today: "Fingers crossed he can do it. He is a determined little boy.

"We are super proud of him."

Tricia said: "I'm so proud of Lewis. He has taken it all in his stride and he's enjoyed doing it, which is the main thing.

"He's loved being out cycling with his dad, and Kyle has been just great too.

"He's a wee champ in my eyes.

"I'd like to thank all the people who have got behind Lewis and myself and have supported us so generously."
