Volunteers wanted was the call to the Inverurie community from John Glover of Inverurie Enviromental Improvement group, at the latest meeting of the Garioch Probus Club this week.

Members present heard of the 6000 plants needed for hanging baskets, display boxes, and the free standing tier planters which are located throughout Inverurie.

Of these, 1600 hundred plants came from Aberdeenshire's nursery, but the remainder had to be purchased.

There was great praise paid to the Pitscurry garden team for making up the baskets, planting, and hardening of displays, prior to the erection of baskets and also their commitment having undertaken this work since the start of the project.

The continuous improvement, and increased numbers of baskets this year involved extra work, especially during the exceptionally hot summer when watering had to be increased.

Originally a team of up to 20 had accepted the challenge of turning out for the watering task, but because of various reasons, including senior citizens, some of whom were in their 80s. the number had fallen off and more volunteers are desperately wanted.

A few hours, during the normal watering three times per week was the minimum.

The vehicle used in Inverurie still has exhaust fumes while stationery, and it is hoped in line with other local group that an electrical replacement would reduce this problem.

Entry to Britain in Bloom had taken place this year as well and a good result is awaited.

This followed a Gold Award in Scotland from 2018 till 2022.

John also showed members shots of the top gardens in Inverurie as well as the new work done in the allotments, overseen by the Men's Shed group.

Other aspects of the work of the Improvement group were displayed including their involvement in mental health action.
