CROSSROADS Primary School closed its doors for what could be the final time on Thursday.

It was announced in November that the school would be mothballed after the number of pupils fell to five.

Pupils – who are set to move to Keith and Rothiemay primary schools – placed padlocks with their name and date on them on the fence outside at home time.

Earlier on, the school had an assembly, which parents were invited to, where emotional goodbyes were said.

Speaking after the assembly, teachers gave a united message.

“Crossroads has always been more than a school and it will continue to have a special place in our hearts," they said.

"You don’t often get the opportunity to work somewhere which feels like family with the pupils, staff and parents working so well together.

“With the support of the Parent Council, we have managed to cram lots of activities into the final few weeks to ensure the children head off with lots of happy memories of their time at Crossroads.

“We wish them and their families all the best in their new schools.”

The decision to mothball Crossroads Primary will be reviewed in April.

However, Moray Council now runs an 'operational assessment' when a school's roll falls below 15, making its reopening unlikely.
