Ellon war memorial rededicated on 100th anniversary

Residents of Ellon marked 100 years since the town’s war memorial was unveiled.

The Royal British Legion Scotland, Gordon Highlands Association and the 1st Ellon Boys Brigade paraded in The Square before the ceremony began on Saturday.

A piper and a bugler played during the hour-long ceremony, held 100 years to the day since the memorial was first revealed.

Just as in 1923, local children – this time members of the Boys Brigade and Armed Forces Cadets – read out the names of the 139 fallen men.

Councillor Gillian Owen said: “It was an honour and a privilege to attend and lay a wreath at the rededication of the Ellon War Memorial.

"The Ellon British Legion did a fabulous job in organising this remarkable event.

"It was so good to see so many youngsters involved.

"It was great to see the Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire Sandy Manson laying a wreath on behalf of the King too.”
