Plans for a new takeaway in Ellon town centre could be given the go-ahead despite outcry from local residents.

Gorkem Gorur is looking to change part of the Greens of Ellon shop into a hot food outlet.

The unit, located in The Square, was formed during the refurbishment of the former Costcutter store back in 2019.

Planning documents reveal that the new takeaway would have a kitchen, counter space and a waiting area for customers.

The application was previously considered by Aberdeenshire Council’s Formartine area committee back in April prior to the local elections.

Councillors agreed to defer the plan to get more details about the type of takeaway that would take on the unit.

They also asked for information about the proposed opening hours, accessibility and litter.

But the application could be deferred again should local members agree to carry out a site visit.

At the meeting councillor Gillian Owen had suggested members visit the unit so they could consider issues raised by objectors.

However she was told it would not be possible because of the local elections that were due to take place.

Eight residents have written to the council to object to the new takeaway.

Concerns have been raised about road safety, litter and odour, while others said the town did not need more food outlets.

One objector even said the new eatery would see Ellon become a “super fast food takeaway highway”.

Meanwhile just one letter in support of the new facility was received.

Despite the concerns raised council planners have recommended the application be given the green light.

They said the new business would “add to the town’s character”, increase footfall in the town centre and provide new jobs.

The application will be considered by the Formartine area committee next Tuesday
