Many former pupils and parents have fond memories of Mr Renton who was proud of his time as a teacher and one of his trade marks was his love of wearing the brightest of ties.

Prior to his death, he asked the school to honour his memory by doing something meaningful with his vast tie collection to raise money for Cancer Research.

So with this in mind, the opportunity has arrisen to be the proud owner of a piece of Ellon Academy history - the ties are now live on Ebay!

Deryck's ties are currently on display in the Ellon Academy foyer till the end of term with bidding remaining open until December 22.

Growing up in Fraserburgh Deryck's aptitude for languages saw him attend Aberdeen University to obtain a MA in foreign languages before he completed his teacher training qualification in June 1979.

Originally starting teaching at the Gordon Schools in Huntly the early 90s saw an opportunity came up closer to his Aberdeen city centre home.

He joined the staff team of Ellon Academy, where he remained for the rest of his career until he retired in 2018 with an Aberdeenshire Council long service award.

During his time he became one of the school’s best-loved teachers, known affectionately as DJ Renton and was known for his all-black attire that forever came paired with multi-coloured, “so loud they could deafen you” ties.
