SCOUTS in Dufftown braved the elements to raise funds and awareness for charity with an overnight camp out.

On March 16, 1st Dufftown Scouts raised cash for the RBLI and the Great Tommy Sleep Out with a five-hour hike of Elgin, followed by an overnight stay in tents at our 1st Elgin scout site.

The section’s leader Karen Fotheringhame said: “They all played manhunt in the rain and had fun in the evening.

“It got very cold overnight and one of the tents broke so the older few had to sleep in the hall, which spooked them out a bit, but they did it!

““My late father was ex-forces, so I have grown up as an Army brat. It's something that is close to me. It's a good cause to raise money for.”

The expedition was part of the Scouts’ challenge badges as they work towards their gold awards. It has so far raised in the region of £120.

The group is continuing to establish itself in Dufftown after returning before the coronavirus pandemic after some time away.

There are currently 12 members, with 10 having taken part in the sleep out.

Karen, who has been a leader at Dufftown a year now, added: “We are plugging away to let folk know we do exist within the area. We are trying to get ourselves into the community and get ourselves known.

“We start our outdoor programme next term after being mainly indoors throughout winter.

“We have trips away for camps, we do shooting, archery, crossbow, shelter-building. We have had a bowling competition and have been canoeing and kayaking and recently snowboarding. Teaching skills for life.

“We have done tons with them since I joined dufftown. They come to learn and experience, so it’s been busy.”

1st Dufftown Scouts meet at the town’s community centre hall on Thursdays from 7pm until 9pm.
