Moray's MP has stated that the UK owes a safe route out of Afghanistan to thousands of refugees.

.

Douglas Ross was commenting as the House of Commons was recalled today to debate what is happening in the capital Kabul and elsewhere in the country.

Mr Ross said: "The situation in Afghanistan has been horrific to watch as it has unfolded.

"It is catastrophic that the country has now fallen back into the hands of the extremes of the Taliban.

"Many brave men and women from here in Moray have served in the region over the years and I thank every single one of them for their dedicated service.

"I know that they will be desperate to know what is happening with friends and colleagues who remain in Afghanistan.

"The UK Government’s commitment to welcome thousands of refugees fleeing the crisis is extremely welcome.

"Throughout this week I have been involved in discussions with the Foreign and Defence Secretaries and I know every effort is being made to ensure they arrive in the UK as safely and as quickly as possible.

.

"We owe it to those who have supported our efforts in Afghanistan over the last two decades to offer them a safe route out of this rapidly deteriorating situation.

"I will be continuing to work closely with colleagues across Government to offer support to those who need it most, and I know our community here in Moray stands ready to help and support these individuals as well."
