Once upon a time the only canines allowed into libraries were guide dogs, Lassie and Fang from Harry Potter.

That was until 'dog-friendly Saturdays' were introduced at a couple of libraries in Aberdeenshire.

Banff and Stonehaven have now reached the midway point of the six-month pilot scheme.

Depending on people's reactions, the idea could be rolled out across the north east.

Julia McCue, from Live Life Aberdeenshire Libraries, said the scheme was set up in response to requests from the public to allow dogs.

She added: "Dogs are really important in people’s lives.

"If this scheme gives confidence for new people to come into the library, or our regulars to come in more often, then it has got to be a positive.

"Today’s libraries are welcoming places.

"Of course, we will have doggy etiquette guidelines in place to ensure all our canine visitors behave themselves.

"But, hopefully, this pilot scheme will allow more people to use our libraries."

Feedback will be collected from library visitors in Banff and Stonehaven to determine whether the scheme continues or is extended to other libraries across Aberdeenshire.
