THE deadlines for competitions to design flags for Moray and Banffshire have been extended "due to widespread interest".

Hundreds of entries have come in for competitions run by the lieutenancies to create a new flag for the areas, with the deadline extended from March 24 until March 31 to give others time to get involved.

Entries have come in from schools across Moray and Banffshire, but entry is open to people of all ages, living anywhere in the world, who have a link to either area. The furthest away entrant so far is living in Argentina.

Nancy Robson, vice lord-lieutenant for Moray, said: "Due to the widespread interest in the competition across Moray, we have decided to extend the deadline by a week. It’s been wonderful to see the enthusiasm from schools!

"I hope that anyone who has hesitated to enter sits down with pens and paper to design what might be Moray’s flag."

Andrew Simpson, lord-lieutenant for Banffshire, added: "There have been some fantastic and imaginative entries for the competition to design flags for Banffshire and Moray.

"The interest has come from across the historic counties and beyond. We continue to invite entries from people of all ages.

"Don’t worry if you are hesitant about your artistic abilities – professionals will develop ideas to ensure that every entry has a fair chance."

Between four and six of the best flags for each lieutenancy area will be chosen by an expert panel to appear in a final, where locals will be given the opportunity to vote for their new flag.

Finalists will be chosen by the end of April, with the public involved in the selection process in summer. Winners will be invited to do flag-raising honours at an event in both areas later in the year.

To get involved, download the flag packs at www.lordlieutenantbanffshire.co.uk/banffshire-flag or www.lordlieutenantmoray.co.uk. Tips on good flag design are also available on the lieutenancy websites.

Both digital and paper submissions will be collected by The Northern Scot. These can be handed into the Scot office, posted to 74-76 South Street, Elgin, IV30 1JG, or sent to countyflags@hnmedia.co.uk
