A cyclist will share his experiences at an Aberdeen event on how he covered all 204 UK Ordnance Survey Landranger maps in a challenge.

In 2022, Mark Wedgwood cycled 7300 miles across all the maps, in numerically ascending order: a six-month odyssey to every part of Scotland, England, Wales and the Isle of Man.

Now in his talks for the Royal Scottish Geographical Society (RSGS) Mark will detail his journey to the most extreme and hard-to-reach places and the most mundane and everyday.

His carefully devised cycling routes introduce people to lesser-known places, strange anomalies and endearing stories that tell of a country that still offers a catalogue of truly uplifting experiences.

No adventure can take people everywhere in Britain, but this one comes close.

Mark said: "I'm an ordinary person; but in 2022 – without leaving this country – I set myself an extraordinary challenge that turned out to be life changing.

"I'm really excited to have the opportunity to share my journey and hopefully inspire a few more people to find and achieve their own personal challenge."

RSGS Aberdeen Group chairman David Green said: "We are delighted to have Mark Wedgwood speak in Aberdeen for the Inspiring People talks programme this year.

“Undertaking a 7300-mile journey around the UK is no small feat, and Mark’s method of doing so, by cycling every OS Landranger Map in order, gives an extra level of depth to his journey, with more care and consideration given to the places he travelled.

"It will be fascinating to hear about everything he encountered on the way.”

Mark Wedgwood is speaking for RSGS in Aberdeen, Dundee, Dunfermline, Glasgow and Edinburgh in the week commencing Monday, January 8.

RSGS Inspiring People talks are open to all: tickets are free for RSGS members, students and under18s and £10 for general admission.

Tickets are available to book online in advance at rsgs.org/events, and are available at the door (cash only).

Mark’s talk begins at 7.30PM on Monday, January 8 at University of Aberdeen, Meston Building, Northern Entrance, Aberdeen.
