Sunshine and cycling provided a colourful spectacle for this year's Banffshire Cycle Challenge.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Banff three courses were on offer to suit every age group and ability.

A 25-mile circuit for the more experienced cyclist which took the cyclists through some of Banffshire's most beautiful countryside; an eight-mile cycle for up-and-coming cyclists; and four miles for the young and less experienced.

The Banffshire Cycle Challenge attracted participants from across the north-east.
The Banffshire Cycle Challenge attracted participants from across the north-east.

The event attracted a wide range of participants from right across the north-east of Scotland, from Grantown-on-Spey, Inverurie and many points in between.

Local groups also featured, taking advantage of the no-fee offer and also receiving at least 75 per cent of their total sponsorship returned.

Bracoden Primary School, the Deveron Harriers and the Deveron Coastal Rowers all enjoyed the event and added to the lively and colourful atmosphere.

On their return, many cyclists commented on how supportive and encouraging the marshals were throughout the event.

One notable local athlete taking part was 16-year-old Finlay Tullet, a talented sailor who is working hard to secure a place in the next Olympic Sailing team.

While cycling is not his chosen sport, he very much recognises the need for sustaining a high level of fitness and took to the course with great enthusiasm.

Rotary President Andy Simpson said: “The Rotary Club of Banff is hugely delighted at the success of the 2019 event.

"As well as raising funds for local good causes, the event is designed to be an enjoyable event for everyone who takes part as well as the marshals and, of course, our sponsors – all of whom contribute to such a successful day.”

The Rotary Club has confirmed that the event raised more than £2000

There will be a short break from Rotary outdoor events during the holiday period in June and July, but the next date for the diary is the Classic Car Experience, which takes to the roads from St Marys Car Park in Low Street Banff on Saturday, August 10.

That will be followed by the annual Rotary Texas Scramble Golf Event at Duff House Royal Golf Course in September.

Further information on both events can be obtained by calling the Rotary secretary on 07881381393.
