The talents of north-east film makers were to the fore thanks to the recent culmination of a unique event which showcases Doric language and culture.

Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University was the setting for the climax of the 2023 Doric Film Festival which took the form of an awards ceremony and screening of this year’s winning entries on the theme: “Dinna Pit Aff.”

The acclaimed Doric Film Festival is supported by the Scottish Government and is the brainchild of award-winning Scots Radio Director Frieda Morrison who created the platform as part of her Scots Radio projects to celebrate the Doric language and its cultural identity.

The annual Festival has a reputation for attracting a diverse field of work from individuals, groups, and schools in celebration of the richness and diversity of the region.

Commenting on the success of the 2023 Doric Film Festival, Frieda Morrison said: “The variety and quality of entries seems to get better every year and there were some difficult decisions for the judges due to the standard of work which was submitted.

“We are pleased that the Doric Film Festival continues to grow its reputation as an important platform for North East film makers to share their work, and we are indebted to all those who support the event in so many ways.”

Professor Peter Reid said: "Robert Gordon University, committed to supporting the North East region socially, culturally, and economically, is delighted to have hosted the 2023 Doric Film Festival at our campus in Garthdee. Doric is such a vibrant part of life here and the University is pleased to be able to celebrate it through the film festival.”

In the primary schools’ category, the winner was Kirkhill Primary School with “Dinna Pit Aff the Lights” whilst the secondary schools’ winner was Banff Academy with their film entitled: “Cyberdoric.”

The category for individual film makers also attracted a high calibre of entry, resulting in a tie between Andrew Saunders, Alex Westwood and Aaron Gayle who also picked up the Spirit O’ the Festival Award with his puppet film: “Three Wee Grumphies.”

The group section also gave the judges plenty of discuss, with joint winners announced as Culsalmond Drama Group, Aberdeen Amateur Radio Society and Torry Heritage Group which also received the judges’ Smeddum Award.
