SEVERAL women walking on the streets of a Moray village have reportedly been approached by strangers during the past few days.

A series of incidents in and around Fochabers have prompted Moray Councillor Marc Macrae to contact the police.

Cllr Macrae said: "I was very alarmed when I became aware of the incidents and concerned that as the nights draw in further we may see any further cases reported.

"When people appear out of nowhere along a dark road or path this can clearly cause significant concern.

"If innocent I would hope that such a passer-by would exchange greetings and be on their way.

"In these cases they appear to have followed these women, deviating as they did so and demonstrating a demeanour enough to cause alarm.

"In another case some ladies were approached on separate occasions by a number of men driving in a white coloured Subaru vehicle, not just on the High Street but along some of the quieter roads in the village.

"These ladies were right to ignore the approaches of the car occupants and indeed one lady said they gave her the creeps with their behaviour."

Cllr Macrae stated he had been in touch with the local Chief Inspector.

He continued: "I would hope that patrols can be increased where possible and any potential descriptions released so that people can feel more reassured.

"As a parent myself I am very concerned that these may not just be isolated incidents but part of a pattern with people targetting the village for whatever reason.

"My daughter is often walking back home from visiting friends and it is alarming that some of these incidents took place in the centre of Focahbers.

"Her mother and I have told her to contact one of us immediately should she see anything or feel uncomfortable and I would hope other parents would do likewise.

"I would encourage anyone experiencing such suspicious behaviour or indeed witnessing it from afar to immediately call the Police on 999.

"No one should feel afraid to go about their daily routine in the village nor should they feel the need to be on guard and constantly looking over their shoulder."

"Some of these incidents may be totally innocent with the parties not intending alarm, however the behaviour they demonstrated does not suggest so.

"Fochabers is a fantastic village to live in and I encourage all to be vigilant so that we can keep it a safe place for all to live in, work in and enjoy."
