At today's (February 2) full Council meeting, members agreed plans to give all staff an extra day of annual leave.

The annual leave will need to be taken on Monday, May 8, the Monday after the Coronation.

The Council's decision also means all school pupils will receive the same day off.

If, for service reasons, staff cannot take annual leave on Monday, May 8 they can organise a different date with management.

The decision was taken unanimously in line with a recommendation by officers.

Councillors were given other two options to consider: first, a cost-neutral arrangement where the May Day Public Holiday would be moved to Monday, May 8 or; second, make the day a public holiday.

Officers said moving the May Day Public Holiday could be "perceived negatively" by staff due to effects on pre-booked holidays.

Also, officers warned against making the day an official public holiday, as compensating those who need to work would cost £7000 more than the £40,000 annual leave plan.
