A former north-east care home which has lain empty since 2016 could finally see a new lease of life as a site for affordable housing.

The Blythwood House care home was closed in 2016 and has had a chequered history in the intervening years.

A plan for affordable housing was made in 2017 but not enacted and the site was devastated by a fire in April 2018 which saw 60 firefighters and 12 vehicles attend to deal with the incident where fire had taken hold of both floors of the two-storey building.

The original building was built as a private residence, but was converted into a care home in the early 1950s. with 37 bedrooms.

MGA Architecture have made a proposal of application for 54 affordable units, the first move before a formal planning application is made on behalf of Places for People Scotland, the trading name of Castle Rock Edinvar Housing Association.

The notice also notes that two public consultations are pencilled in for Thursday, July 20 and August 10 at Inverurie Town Hall, but no further details have been published regarding times.

There are also considerable issues over the proposed overall size of the site as the majority of the indicated area lies within area P10 protected green space in the current Local Development Plan.
