Coronavirus update: Two years on and cases are higher than ever

In Scotland in the last 24 hours there have been a total of 12,421 positive cases of coronavirus recorded from PCR and LFD testing.

NHS Glasgow recorded 2522 combined tests and NHS Lothian 2025.

NHS Grampian saw 1233 while NHS Highland recorded 881 positive tests in total.

39 new deaths were recorded with Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

In the seven days to March 20, Aberdeenshire saw 3598 positive tests (1379.7 per 100,000), Aberdeen City 2627 (1146.9 per 100,000) and Moray 1538 (1606.9 per 100,000).

Most areas have started to see a very gradual slow down in day to day case increases across the north-east as the country marked the second anniversary of lockdown starting in 2020.

On March 23, 2020 Scotland recorded 83 cases of coronavirus, which at the time, had no vaccination response and no known treatment.

It was also confirmed today that Secondary school pupils will have to keep wearing face coverings in communal areas after the Easter holidays when moving around inside school buildings as case numbers in pupils and increasingly in staff have lead to some year groups being forced to study by remote learning across the country.

Mask rules for the general public in shops and on public transport are expected to be converted to guidance and are expected to be changed on April 4.

To date in Scotland more than 4,451,641 people have received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccination and over 4,176,494 people have received their second dose with 3,479,040 having had a third or booster dose.
