Cornhill Highland Games set to showcase top athletes

Cornhill is getting set for its Highland Games which take place in the village on Saturday, June 1.

The event kicks off from 10am with Highland dancing competitions, followed by a variety of heavy and light traditional contests from 11am, including the popular toss the caber and throwing the hammer.

Now in its 52nd year, the Knock Hill Race which challenges competitors across an 8.5 mile road and hill route starts at 11am, with the same start time for the 10k road race.

There is prize money up for grabs for the top places in both races. Registration is online in advance at www.entrycentral.com

A number of children’s races will take place in the games arena from 2pm, with all younger visitors welcome to join the fun.

Teams from across the north-east will battle it out in the enthralling tug of war competitions, where young farmers winners from both mens and ladies contests will qualify for the Royal Highland Show competitions later this year.

Visitors can also enjoy entertainment from local pipe bands, a variety of stalls and catering options, as well as a licensed bar.

DJ, music and karaoke entertainment will be in the bar from 4.30pm (over 18s only).
