A weekend of celebration is set to mark the completion of £650,000 renovation of Portsoy's community church centre.

Eight years of planning and fundraising will come to fruition when the building is officially opened this Friday.

The building is set to be used once again as main place of worship for the congregation and also as a major community facility for the town.

Ian Whewell from the church, who has helped spearhead the project said: "The old East Kirk situated in the heart of the town with its famous clock tower, which for many years was also used as the church hall, has been transformed by the refurbishment and rebuilding project.

"With major funding from North Aberdeenshire Leader Fund together with the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic

Environment Scotland the interior of the town’s 'Auld Kirk' has been stripped and insulated to modern standards and the exterior repaired.

"With additional funding from Viridor Credits an air-source heat pump underfloor heating system has been installed throughout the building.

"A new extension has been constructed at the rear with a modern kitchen, enlarged meeting room and modern toilets.

"The new enlarged meeting room also houses a new heritage exhibition showcasing the history of the building and of the churches in the town and also the development of Christianity in the area.

"It is hoped it will be an additional tourist attraction for visitors to the town and the area."

The weekend of celebration begins on Friday evening at 7pm with a rededication service.

On Saturday there is a musical evening, also starting at 7pm, featuring Raymond Wilson on the new church organ, 75 Club Singers and members of the Portsoy Pipe Band.

The Sunday morning service of thanksgiving at 10.30am concludes the weekend.

The events are free and all are welcome to join in the celebration.
