On Friday afternoon officers from Cruden Bay, Peterhead and Aberdeen Coastguard rescue teams alongside Coastguard Helicopter - Rescue 151 (Inverness) were requested to assist Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) with a casualty extraction from the Forvie National Nature Reserve.

SAS were already on scene and providing care to the casualty when the call was made.

Their Special Operations Response Team had been unable to gain access with their all terrain vehicle due to the nature of the ground.

Once on scene a helicopter landing site was selected and prepared for R151, the helicopter being guided in by a Coastguard officer.

The casualty was quickly transferred to the helicopter stretcher, onto the helicopter and transported to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where the Aberdeen team were manning the hospital helicopter landing site.

A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "Last year Coastguard Rescue teams in the north-east refreshed their helicopter operations training with the arrival of the new helicopter to the Inverness base.

"Recently there have been a number of incidents locally including at Boddam and Slains where the selection of landing areas, landing on and winching operations have been a significant element of the incident proving the value of this regular training.

"In a Coastal emergency remember to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
