Extinction Rebellion has urged councillors to move quickly to implement Moray Council's Climate Change Strategy.

.

The strategy, which will looks set to be adopted on Wednesday, declares the aim of making the council carbon neutral by 2030

It comes after local authority originally announced a "climate change emergency" 22 months ago in June 2019.

A previous vote was delayed in January due to the pandemic.

Simon Clark of XR Forres, the local branch of Extinction Rebellion, said: "Moray Council’s officers clearly understand the depth of the climate crisis we are in and have produced a clear, well thought through strategy to play its part in tackling it.

"However we must never forget we are in a climate emergency only because sweet words of understanding and concern have not been met with the required political and corporate action over the last 30 years.

"The wheels of change usually grind along slowly with a stubborn, well-worn inertia.

"The 22 months since the council’s declaration have seen global carbon emissions continue to grow, even in Covid downturn.

"We congratulate the council on getting this far and implore them to speedily keep up the work and approach all the people of Moray, including the whisky, food and defence industries, to come together in the battle for a low carbon, pollution-free, nature-rich, caring world."

According to its own research earlier this year, the council is responsible for about four per cent of Morays greenhouse gas emissions, while industry and commerce account for around two-thirds.
