MEMBERS past and present gathered for a party last week to mark a century of the Glass Rural Scottish Women’s Institute group.

President of the Glass group, Miranda Montgomery, said it was lovely to have around 40 women in attendance at the very special event.

She said: “Our amazing team of about 12 current members were so enthusiastic to decorate the hall and get organised the night before, and I’m so grateful to them.

“We had champagne on arrival, a piper, an accordion player and a beautiful cake with the SWI colours on it.”

The cake was made by Margot Wordie and decorated by group treasurer Frances Harrold and her grand-daughter Eilidh.

Decorations including balloons, tissue garlands and bespoke bunting were created by group members.

“The bunting is very special,” commented Mrs Montgomery. “Each triangle is different – some are knitted, embroidered, there’s collage work.”

The group, which was originally launched by Mrs Burkett at Beldourney Castle, was honoured to have the SWI national president, Ann Kerr, present at the event, as well as the Aberdeenshire SWI president Helen Smillie and her vice-president Janice Stephen.

The group meets on the first Thursday of every month and welcomes new members.

Working alongside the aforementioned president and treasurer is secretary Lilian Cameron.
