The community of Methlick and surrounding areas is invited to gather with Ythan Valley Rotary, Methlick Community Council and local Ukrainian families to celebrate Independence Day Of Ukraine on Wednesday, August 24.

The celebrations will take place at the south end of the cricket pitch between 6pm and 8pm.

During the celebrations traditional borsch - a hearty soup with beetroot as one of the key ingredients which is most often associated with Ukraine - will be served.

In 2022 UNESCO announced that it had placed the cooking of borsch (sometimes known as borscht) on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage In Need Of Urgent Safeguarding as a case of extreme urgency due to risks posed by Russia's invasion.

On the night some will be wearing Ukrainian national dress and this is an opportunity to learn more about Ukrainian culture and traditions.

Methlick Community Council has donated £300 towards the event, which has also been supported by Ythanview Hotel, Haddo Estate, Ythan Valley Rotary and the Ukrainian community of north Aberdeenshire.
