Canal connoisseur Ian Nelson gave his audience a most enlightening talk on the history of the once vital Aberdeenshire waterway.

His illustrated presentation covered some of the many trials, tribulations and the success of the canal linking Inverurie and Aberdeen harbour.

Though not financially viable the canal was hugely successful for the once small town of Inverurie.

As well as transporting grain, flour and local produce, the canal boats carried coal, whisky, bones and guana from Peru, these last two being a useful fertiliser.

In its heyday the canal carried 10,000 passengers each year.

The society's next meeting is on October 5 when the guest will be Ian Davidson giving a talk on the Bon Accord Baths.
