A councillor has reminded Ellon residents to make sure grit bins in the community are filled up in preparation for winter.

Councillor Gillian Owen also expressed concern that some are being used by people to dump their rubbish.

She said: "With the darker nights and the colder weather I wanted to remind all residents to check their yellow grit bins.

"I have checked a number and they seem fine, although some still seem to be used as bins.

"With the onset of winter, I am appealing to residents to not only check their grit bins are full but that any rubbish is taken away.

"I am urging people to not dispose of their rubbish in the grit bins and rather use a refuse bin or take it home with them."

People can use the myAberdeenshire app on their phones to report a grit bin needing filled. There is an interactive map and users can find the one at their location and click on it.

This can also be reported on the local authority's website at www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/roads/winter-maintenance/grit-bin

Alternatively members of the public who do not have the app or use the internet can call 03456 08 12 05.

People who would like to request a grit bin be located in their area can contact councillor Owen by calling 07768 257392 or by emailing cllr.g.owen@aberdeenshire.gov.uk
