Budding athletes ready for start of Highland Games season

More than 20 participants from all over Scotland descended on the home of the Braemar Highland Gathering for this year’s first training event for new heavy event competitors.

Following a successful similar event in Crieff last year, the Royal Scottish Highland Games Association (RSHGA) partnered with the Braemar Gathering and the Grampian Games Association to provide free training for anyone interested in becoming a heavies athlete.

Athletes and coaches attended the training event at Braemar.

In addition to learning the techniques of throwing the hammer and tossing the caber, athletes received instruction on clean sport and safe equipment handling, meanwhile organisers saw a demonstration of how to mark out the heavies throwing area.

RSHGA secretary Ian Grieve said: “We’ve been delighted with the level of interest and it’s great to see both male and female athletes across a range of ages; hopefully we’ll see them continue to compete in the years to come.

"We’re working with our membership to run further sessions in other regions.”

RSHGA members run more than 60 Highland Games from May to September, visit www.rshga.org for more information.
