British Wool and the Young Farmers SAYFC, have enjoyed a strong relationship and as in previous years, British Wool is now offering young farmers an opportunity to attend a beginner shearing course, enabling YFC members to work towards a Blue Seal award.
The course will be over two days, covering all the essential aspects of achieving a successful shearing season, including health and safety, the use of shearing equipment and hands-on shearing practice to develop your technique.
This British Wool offer is open to YFC members who have not previously attended a British Wool shearing course.
The exclusive price YFC members will pay for this training offer is £87.50 (plus VAT) – the normal cost for this course would be £175 plus VAT.
Excellent fleece presentation starts at shearing, but the work of the wool handler is equally important, ensuring the wool is presented correctly and to a high standard.
British Wool is extending its training offer for YFC members to participate in its wool handling course.
This one-day course will be delivered by a competitive wool handler at a discounted price of only £60 plus VAT.
Richard Schofield, Shearing Manager at British Wool, said: “We are once again delighted to be working with SAYFC in supporting the training and development of the next generation of shearers and look forward to welcoming young farmers onto our courses once again this year.
"I’d encourage any interested YFC member to contact the SAYFC before the 31st March closing date.”
A previous course attendee Kirsty Clark from New Cumnock Young Farmers said: “I have been involved in the shearing industry for three years with a contractor as a Wool Handler.
"In 2021 I clipped my first few sheep and then saw in February 2022 there was a young farmer discount available through the SAYFC and British Wool.
"This was highly encouraging to go on a course and learn from different people with the knowledge shared by the professionals for us personally phenomenal.
"The knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm the instructors showed for young people learning their skills was great to see.
"The ability to clip sheep is an amazing skill that has to be learnt by physically doing it.
"I think, this young farmer discount means young people with sheep on farms are more likely to want to learn and clip their own sheep instead of getting a contractor in.
"It’s a great skill to learn and I’m so glad these opportunities to get on courses are becoming even more widespread.”
