John Swinney confirmed that exam marks which were downgraded will now be marked based on estimations provided by schools.

"Using powers available to me in the Education Scotland act 1996 I am today directing the SQA to reissue those awards based solely on teacher or lecturer judgement.

"Schools will be able to provide the estimates they provided to pupils to those that are returning to school this week and next.

"The SQA will issue fresh certificates to candidates as soon as possible and importantly will inform UCAS and admission bodies as soon as practicable.

"Where grades were increased, they will not be affected, to unpick them now would not be fair.

"We will make sure enough places are available in university and college courses to make sure no one is crowded out as a result."
