THE brand new sports facility at Lesser Borough Briggs in Elgin, called The Gleaner Arena, welcomed its very first users this afternoon.

While Monday, July 26, is the first day the facility can officially be booked out, local youngsters were invited down for a game today after finishing touches were put on the arena.

At 3pm, kids between the ages of five and 12 enjoyed playing football on the brand new astroturf.

Elgin Sports Community Trust (ESCT) has run the project. The group's chairman Dave Allen said: "We finished putting up the goals and nets this morning.

"This meant we had finished a couple of days ahead of schedule so we opened it up and invited the kids to come and use it.

"About 80 kids came down to play.

"Monday is the first official day of bookings and the arena can be booked online."

Building on The Gleaner Arena began in November 2020, and has been completed in a timely fashion – despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The facility will offer all in the Moray community the chance to take part in any sport that can be played on grass.

There is one full-size astroturf football pitch and two five-a-side pitches.

On August 14, an open day will be held, giving people a chance to get a feel for the place.

Five and six-a-side football leagues will start soon after the open day.

Booking is now open and available to all at www.esct.co.uk.
