A north-east church has been awarded a funding boost from Aberdeenshire Council to make further improvements at a Belhelvie hall.

Belhelvie Church of Scotland will get £5000 to upgrade car park facilities at Forsyth Hall.

The cash will come from the Formartine area committee budget.

Overall, the upgrade work is expected to cost £20,400 but the group will source the remainder of the cash elsewhere.

The hall has seen its usage increase since the pandemic and church members said the resurfacing work was needed to improve safety for visitors.

It is hoped the work will also allow Forsyth Hall to open up to weddings and funerals, and increase availability to those with mobility issues.

Currently, the car park’s existing surface can get quite muddy and difficult to walk on.

The funding application was considered by members of the area committee on Tuesday, June 6.

Mid-Formartine councillor Andrew Hassan praised the “fantastic” facility.

He said: “The church has done a lot of work to the hall and brought it up-to-date, a lot of the fundraising has been done by themselves.”

Councillor Derek Ritchie noted that the hall is “well worth a look” and said he was “wholeheartedly in favour of this money being allocated to them”.

Meanwhile, committee chairman councillor Iain Taylor congratulated the church for their work upgrading the hall and supported the funding.
