Local arts organisation Deveron Projects has operated a barter cart for the last three years, which has become a key focal point of the town centre.

Since 2020, the cart has been used to share bread from the Honesty Bakehouse, swap house plants and cuttings, and exchange tomatoes, potatoes, flowers and plums – and more.

After maintenance and a lick of paint from local artist Darren Farquhar, the cart has been reintroduced as part of artist Kawther Luay's project The Gathering Table.

The organisation hopes to encourage people to use the cart, which is part of the Town Collection of over 100 artworks around Huntly, to barter, trade and swap excess produce and homemade items.

Zuzana Fryntová, who looks after the organisation's Town Collection said: "One of our focusses here at Deveron Projects is thinking about food.

"And the growing, cooking, eating and sharing that is involved with this.

"The Honesty Cart is an experiment in honesty-based and non-monetary exchange, allowing us to think about what genuine 'common wealth' can look like.

"We hope the cart will continue to be used by the residents of Huntly to gift, share and swap their produce, and to build on the mutual support that the town has such an amazing track record of."

For the rest of Kawther Luay's project, The Honesty Cart will also be stocked with the artist's hand-made products, including vinegars, salts and sauces made from locally foraged ingredients.

To use the cart, place your items into one of the compartments, with an expiry date for perishable items, and help yourself to anything already in there.

The Honesty Cart is unmanned and available to use 24/7.
