Banffshire Memories project launched by Lord Lieutenant

BANFFSHIRE'S Lord Lieutenant has launched a project to preserve locals' stories of life in the area for future generations.

The Banffshire Memories project aims to gather stories from people living in the historic Banffshire area which will go to create a record of life as it was over the last 70-plus years, illustrating the changes that have shaped local communities.

All stories submitted will be added to a website that will be made available to the public and schools for local history studies, family tree research or general interest.

Several of the entries will also be selected for a book to mark the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s reign in 2022 and a copy will be presented to the monarch.

The book will also be sold in shops and tourist venues across historic Banffshire, with any profits bound for local charities.

Heritage groups from across historic Banffshire are involved in the project, which is being hosted on the Banffshire Field Club’s website, at banffshirefieldclub.org.uk. Stories can be submitted directly or on a form available for downloading.

Andrew Simpson, Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire, said: "The Banffshire Memories project seeks to capture memories that illustrate the life and spirit of the people and communities of historic Banffshire.

"I am very grateful for the support and help from many local groups.

"Together we will be able to create a resource that can be shared with younger and future generations and give visitors insights into the rich heritage of our area."

Suggested topics for stories include but are not limited to: special family occasions (births, weddings and deaths); festivals and community events (Christmas, local fairs or shows); school life; workplace; family life; sporting or social activities; events linked to national or international events or people (eg World War Two, royal visits, the death of George VI or coronation of Queen Elizabeth); extreme weather events; or special achievements by local groups.

Entries can be submitted either from people’s own memories or on behalf of someone else. Stories that have already been collected for other projects or publications may be included.

Entrants are asked to keep their stories to no more than 200 words in length.

The closing date for submissions is May 28, 2021.
