A new craft beer has been created for Banff's Local Hero Festival which will mark the 40th anniversary of the classic movie.

The film was said to have put Scotland on the cinematic map, so residents of the town are planning the three-week event to honour its birthday, which is set to bring superfans from around the world together.

Festival planners has hoped that Brewdog – whose headquarters are in Aberdeenshire like the movie’s – would get on board with the festival.

Andrew Mellon Local Hero Festival director, said: “We hoped Brewdog might produce a special edition Local Hero beer, given its global HQ is just 26 miles away from famed filming location Pennan – the tiny village used as a set for the 1983 iconic Scottish film."

However, seeing no success to secure Brewdog, the opportunity to create a new Local Hero themed beer is going to Lanarkshire-based microbrewery Outlandish – owned by brothers Ronnie and Kenny Lees.

Partnering up with the famous Pennan Inn, they have created a new Local Hero Brew. The local inn will open its bar from Thursday, April 20 until the end of the festival in late May to offer this new creation.

With superfans flocking to Banff to soak up all things Local Hero, the new brew becomes the official beer of the Local Hero Festival, running from May 6-27.

The brother duo has created a pale ale and Pennan Inn owner Monika has designed and created the Local Hero label for it.

The beer will be available on tap and in bottles throughout the festival and it is expected that many pints will be sold to “Local Hero” superfans around the world.

The brew is a perfect accompaniment to the already announced National Rabbit Pie Bake Off taking place at the festival.
