The Conservative MP said the £15 billion support package from Rishi Sunak would bring “significant support” to those struggling with energy costs.

Every household in the UK is to get an energy bill discount of £400 this October while the poorest will also receive a payment of £650 to help with the cost of living.

Overall, the package will benefit the lowest-income households by £1,200 – with some households receiving £1,650

More targeted help will also be offered to pensioners and the disabled and will be offset by a 25 per cent energy profits levy.

Conservative MP for Banff and Buchan, David Duguid, said: “Rishi Sunak’s announcement sends a strong message that the UK Government is committed to tackling the cost of living for households while ensuring we have a strong economy.

“This package will bring significant support, particularly for the most vulnerable households which will receive at least £1,200 of support to help with the cost of living this year – double what Labour’s proposals would have delivered.

“The temporary energy profits levy, a far less blunt and punitive instrument than what Labour was proposing, will help pay for this support while continuing to promote investment in our economy.

“It’s important the oil and gas industry is seen as part of the solution and not the problem in the same way as the UK Government has engaged with the sector to help meet energy security and net zero objectives.

“I made it clear to the Chancellor during his speech that it’s important we have productive and constructive dialogue with the oil and gas industry as the measures move forward and I will be ensuring this is done.”
