Banff and Buchan MP comments on resignation of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon
Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid has commented on today's announcement that Nicola Sturgeon has resigned as First Minister.
At a press conference in Bute House this morning Ms Sturgeon confirmed that she would be leaving the top post in Scottish politics.
The SNP leader will not step down immediately, but the process to replace her in the role has begun.
Ms Sturgeon, who has been First Minister since 2014, insisted the decision was not made as a reaction to "short-term pressures".
The decision to resign was reached over the long-term, she added, before going onto say she wouldn't be leaving politics completely.
Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid said: “Nicola Sturgeon’s position has undoubtedly become more untenable in recent months and her resignation shouldn’t come as a surprise
“As First Minister, she has repeatedly prioritised the interests of the Central Belt while trying to divide our nation – certainly not what is actually important to the residents of Banff and Buchan.
“Here in the north-east, her reckless decision to allow the Greens into government has resulted in destructive policies which risk damaging our oil and gas, farming, fishing and drinks industries.
“While the SNP’s core obsession remains breaking up the United Kingdom, they will never select a leader with Scotland’s real best interests at heart.
“The SNP Government now has the opportunity to shift focus away from constitutional issues and towards improving public services that matter to the people of Banff and Buchan.”
