BANFF and Buchan MP David Duguid has urged people to "unite behind" new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Mr Sunak was named Prime Minister on Monday, October 24, four days after the resignation of Liz Truss from the role, which she held for 45 days.

A total of 193 Conservative MPs backed Mr Sunak and no other candidate officially reached the threshold of 100 – meaning he was elected without a leadership challenge.

David Duguid never backed any candidate prior to Rishi Sunak winning the race to be PM.

“I congratulate Rishi Sunak on becoming our new party leader and I look forward to him guiding our country through some of the toughest challenges the country has faced," Mr Duguid said.

“We all need to unite behind our new Prime Minister and get on with the critical job of helping families and businesses through the winter, addressing global cost of living issues and continuing our recovery from the pandemic.

“I look forward to working with the Prime Minister to keep delivering for the people of Banff and Buchan and the whole United Kingdom.”
