Banff Academy pupil Paul Chalmers is set to take to the stage next month as Prince Eric in the Scottish premier of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

Performing with Huntly-based theatre group Aurora Productions in its first stage musical since December 2019, S6 pupil Paul will be joined by a cast of talented local performers from across Aberdeenshire and Moray.

The show will run from May 31 to June 4 in The Stewarts Hall, Huntly.

The cast has been rehearsing for over a month. But musical director Hugh Johnstone explains that preparation for this show has been going on for much longer.

Some of the cast from the Little Mermaid (from left) are: June Cranna (Ursula), Kirsten Rennie (Ariel), Paul Chalmers (Prince Eric) and Lauren MacAskill (Ursula).

He said: “We are so excited to be getting back on stage – we have missed performing so much. We have spent the last two years getting ready for what is hopefully going to be our biggest and best show yet.

"The set is under construction, the costumes have been designed, the special effects are being planned, and the cast is already sounding incredible. This is going to be a show not to be missed.”

The musical is inspired by the 1989 Disney movie of the same name, and will feature songs that audiences young and old will know and love, such as Under the Sea, Part of Your World and Kiss The Girl.

Audiences will also recognise the cast of characters from the animated classic. Alongside Paul as Prince Eric will be former Banff Academy pupil Lauren MacAskill, who is sharing the role of the evil sea witch Ursula with Huntly’s June Cranna. The lead role of Ariel will be shared by Louise Morrison, and Forgue Primary School teacher Kirsten Rennie.

Other cast members include Lewis Moggach as Sebastian, Neil Bell-Forsyth as King Triton, Lily Chaplain as Flounder, Mallory Black as Scuttle the seagull, Elizabeth Ingram and Alicia Riddell as Flotsam and Jetsam, and Sarah McWilliam as Chef Louis.

Hugh added: “This show is going to be fun for the whole family. There really is something for everyone to enjoy – we are really looking forward to entertaining audiences again.”
