Boundaries Scotland has today published its belief that the Moray constituency should remain unchanged for the Holyrood elections.

This contrasts sharply with proposals currently under discussion to split Moray into two for the Westminster elections.

Moray Labour has welcomed today's announcement regarding the Scottish elections.

Councillor Ben Williams (Fochabers, Lhanbryde) said: "At last, some sensible boundary proposals which reflect the character and identities of local communities.

"These proposals will be welcome, in general, by voters in Moray.

"Although I would like to see a solution that includes Buckie and Cullen, I appreciate that would make Moray, by far, the largest electorate in Scotland, so probably isn’t feasible."

Cllr Williams is also urging local residents to respond to the consultation proposals.

He said: "Just as it was important for Moray residents to voice their opposition to the bonkers proposals to split Moray in two for Westminster, it's equally important that voters respond to these proposals to demonstrate that they are satisfactory."

As regards to the Westminster proposals, it's been suggested that Moray is divided up between two newly-formed constituencies.

The first of these would be called Aberdeenshire North and Moray East, while the other would be Nairn, Strathspey and Moray West.

The Boundary Commission of Scotland is set to submit its Westminster proposals to the Speaker of the House of Commons by July 1 next year.
