Over the last two months artists Ramkumar Kannadasan and Santtu Laine have been on residency at Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW) in Lumsden, Aberdeenshire continuing SSW's long history of supporting international artists.

Ramkumar traveled from Chennai in India with support of the Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship and spent time working in ceramics and stone and meeting with other Scottish artists and makers during his stay.

As well developing his own making skills he has been learning from SSW and other workshops about how to set up his own multidisciplinary workshop in Mamallapuram, India for other local, national and international artists to develop their own three dimensional work and skills.

"It has been wonderful to spend time in Lumsden and to learn so much during my stay at SSW.

"It has also been great to visit so many other brilliant organisations and I look forward to bringing this knowledge home with me and putting my learning into practice over the coming years.

"I also hope to continue my international studies and learning through future opportunities"

Santtu Laine traveled from Helsinki in Finland through the Ecologies of Making residency programme set up by SSW in collaboration with Cove Park and UniArts Helsinki and supported by Saastamoinen Foundation.

During his residency, split between Cove Park in Helensburgh and SSW, he developed his knowledge of working with bio-plastics made from algae as a sculptural material.

He has tested over 100 bio-plastic recipes during his residency and has now developed a method he is able to use for making ecologically friendly regenerative art work.

“With support from this residency I have been able to develop my work so much.

"In the four months I have been in Scotland I have been able to do what would have taken me four years working alongside my other commitments in Helsinki.

"I look forward to sharing my work back in Finland that was developed at Cove Park and at SSW”

These residencies ended with an open studio at SSW on Friday June 30 where the artists shared their work with local audiences.
