A competition has been launched online to name an archaeological dig which aims to locate a lost 10th-Century north-east monastery.

Researchers from the Book of Deer project are currently working on funding grants to help them continue the search.

These will be used to continue research excavations at a site near Old Deer where they have previously found many historical artefacts, including a medieval gaming board.

For more than 10 years researchers have been looking for traces of the former monastery whose only evidence of existence is the noted Book of Deer itself.

The Monastery of Deer is considered by experts to be the origin site of the book which is currently held at Cambridge University.

Now the team behind the project are giving members of the public the opportunity to come up with a name for the project in an online competition.

The lucky winner will join archaeologists for a day at the Aberdeenshire site once the dig gets under way and see their project name used for the National Lottery Herirage Grant application.
