Gordon MP Richard Thomson has highlighted yet another promise made by the Westminster parties as part of the No campaign which has been thrown on the scrapheap as UK interest rates and borrowing costs skyrocket again.

During the 2014 referendum campaign, the Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats promised that ‘as part of the UK we benefit from lower borrowing costs meaning lower mortgage and credit card bills’.

That claim was once again destroyed when the Bank Of England was forced to raise interest rates, causing mortgage rates to jump again and the cost of borrowing balloon.

It is the latest 2014 No pledge to join the scrapheap of broken promises after people in Scotland were told:

  • Voting No is the only guarantee of Scotland’s membership of the EU.
  • Boris Johnson would never become Prime Minister.
  • Scotland’s north-east would become a carbon capture hub.
  • The UK provides better protection for pensioners.
  • Cheaper energy bills as part of the UK.
  • Lower shopping bills in the UK.
  • Every Scot being £1,400 better off as part of the UK.
  • Scottish farming would be better off with a No vote.
  • Staying under Westminster control would ensure no EU roaming charges.
  • Civil service jobs would be protected as part of the UK.

Commenting, Richard Thomson MP said: “As interest rates and mortgages continue to soar, Scotland is facing the prospect of the longest recession on record.

"The choice could not be clearer - chaos under Westminster control or forging our own path to unleash Scotland’s potential as an independent country.

“A long list of promises and assertions made by the No campaign in 2014 have been shown to be based on a false premise.

"Most, if not all of them, have been proven to be complete nonsense and it is the people of Scotland who suffer as a result as fuel, mortgage, and shopping bills skyrocket, a direct result of catastrophic economic decisions taken by Westminster.

“We were told in 2014 that Scotland would lose its EU membership with a Yes vote, but we were taken out anyway against our will.

"We were told every person in Scotland would be £1400 better off under Westminster control but does anyone feel better off now?

"We were told shopping and energy bills would be cheaper in the UK, but prices keep going up and up.

“Scotland is being held back by Westminster control, with countries a similar size to Scotland outperforming the UK in several measures.

"They are fairer, more equal and have lower poverty rates.

“Scotland is being dragged along for the ride in broken Brexit Britain.

"The only way for Scotland to escape the chaos and economic disaster of the UK is by taking control of our own affairs.”
