INVERURIE Academy head teacher Mark Jones has praised pupils, parents and staff for their efforts following the publication of this year’s exam results.

Mr Jones, right, said: “I would wish to congratulate students from Inverurie Academy on their success.

“Thanks also goes to parents and carers who have supported students at home and also to the hard work and efforts of our fantastic school staff.

“I am really pleased with the continued progression with attainment at Inverurie Academy and would like to extend my thanks and congratulations to all.”

He highlighted several notable achievements by the school this year and said: “There are very pleasing results right across S4 with at least six of our students achieving A’s in all of their subjects, including some who were presented early at Higher level.

“We have positive results in S5 with one of our students achieving six A passes at Higher and some who were presented early for Advanced Higher level. S6 students achieved successes across the cohort with three students achieving three A’s at Advanced Higher.”

He continued: “This year has seen the introduction of a new suite of awards and we were delighted to see 178 additional passes in these new subjects.

“These included ten students who achieved Foundation Apprenticeships in Social Services: Children and Young People and Scientific Technologies.”

Some 64 pupils in Aberdeenshire celebrated five straight A awards in their Higher exams and this year more than 300 pupils from secondary schools across Aberdeenshire have other reasons to cheer after gaining their Foundation Apprenticeship.

This qualification is aimed at senior pupils and combines learning in class with a related work placement in which they hone their professional skills too.

It is equivalent to a Higher, with many universities, colleges and workplaces counting it as an A pass at Higher or even two Highers towards entry requirements.

Across the board in terms of results this year, Aberdeenshire is continuing to see a positive trajectory of improvement.

More than 6000 young people entered for 30,000 courses across 70 qualification areas at SCQF Levels 2-7, and there were solid improvements in the overall pass rates at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Levels.

At National 5 Level, the overall pass rate in English is now 87.6 per cent and for maths 70.1 per cent.

Councillor Gillian Owen, who chairs Aberdeenshire Council’s Education and Children’s Services committee, said: “I’m so pleased to see our young people able to breathe a long-awaited sigh of relief, recognised for their efforts and celebrating all they have achieved even in the face of adversity this year.

“Please, give yourself a well-earned pat on the back.”
