A transport safety education officer at Aberdeenshire Council, who has dedicated herself to supporting more than 25,000 children to develop on-road cycling skills, has been presented with a special accolade.
June Andrew was named the winner of the 10th Anniversary Achievement Award at this year’s Bikeability Scotland awards.
It was conceived to recognise an outstanding contribution to the delivery of school cycle training since the inception of the Bikeability programme in 2010.
Judges commented on June’s “long-term dedication and commitment” to the programme and her “energy and enthusiasm” in tirelessly serving such a large authority area.
Her involvement with school cycle training predates the Bikeability programme and she is the leading council staff representative for the nationwide initiative in Aberdeenshire, serving some 150 primary schools across a wide geographical area.
More than 100 schools take part in level 2 on-road training in the region each year.
June said: “I am very happy to have received this award. Bikeability is a great scheme which allows children to have an on-road cycling experience whilst being supervised.
"I really enjoy working across Aberdeenshire with the schools and their pupils who are all very supportive of the training.”
Councillor Peter Argyle, chairman of the local authority's infrastructure services committee, said: “This truly is a tremendous achievement and our thanks and our warmest congratulations go to June for all the outstanding work she has undertaken with Aberdeenshire children over the years.”
Aberdeenshire Council’s head of transportation Ewan Wallace said: “June’s devotion to this role in supporting more than 25,000 children develop vital cycling skills is clear for all to see and the judges felt there was only one true candidate for the award.
“This is richly-deserved recognition for June who is an inspiration to us all in the transportation service.”
