Starting at 10am, the event will be held in the castle's lavish Victorian ballroom and will see ten of the world’s greatest pipers, who will be announced in September, compete in the Piobaireachd and March, Strathspey and Reel disciplines to determine an overall winner.

Last year’s winner of the inaugural Glenfiddich trophy, first won by Dundee’s James ‘Jimmy’ McIntosh, was nine-time winner and McCallum Bagpipes consultant Willie McCallum, from Kintyre’s Campbeltown.

The piping championship was established in 1974 and is run by the National Piping Centre, with funding from the William Grant Foundation.

The National Piping Centre’s Director of Piping, Finlay MacDonald, said: “It’s a fantastic celebration of the best pipers in the world, and over the last five decades there have been some legendary competitors and winners which showcase the very best in our field.”

With limited availability at the show on the day, tickets are encouraged to be bought online beforehand, at a rate of £20 per person or £15 for concessions.

As well as welcoming a live audience, the competition will be streamed online for worldwide viewers for £15, which will be available for seven days after the competition ends.

In-person audience members will receive a complimentary programme and there will also be a commemorative booklet on sale for £5 chronicling the history of the competition.

Macdonald added: “We got some exciting new additions to this year’s event lined up to mark this amazing milestone.”

Among the celebratory events for the event's 50th anniversary, the annual Pipers Celidh will be held after the championship at the Atholl Palace Hotel in Pitlochry.

This event has limited availability and tickets will cost an additional £60.
