The Tininver Park project is already guaranteed £8000 by reaching the final three of Tesco’s regional Bags of Help competition, which will distribute proceeds from the 5p carrier bag charge.

However, votes from Herald readers and the wider community could prove the difference in volunteers securing £10,000 or £12,000.

Voting starts this Saturday and goes on for nine days in local Tesco stores in Keith, Buckie, Elgin and Forres.

The project with the most votes will receive the £12,000 top prize.

Dufftown is up against the Lintmill Playpark project at Cullen and Burghead Amenities Project.

A separate project will upgrade the children's playpark at Tininver.

Anne Fraser, a trustee of Dufftown Community Association, said: "We have got £8000 no matter what happens and that will help us sort the drainage at the park and do some sympathetic planting."

Winning the £12,000 would allow the park project volunteers to go much further sooner. They have a year to complete the project once they have received the funding.

They also hope to put in seating and picnic benches and create a mini-wildlife area, which could go ahead much quicker with an extra £4000.

Eleanor Candy, chairwoman of the association, said: "This is just fantastic news and very exciting."

Fellow community association trustee Nicky Alexander added: "This money will get things kick-started and is a great start. We will still need more fundaising in the future to do more."

People can vote for the Tininver Park project at any of the four Tesco stores – Keith, Buckie, Elgin and Forres.

Fiona Addison, Tesco Keith community champion, said every time customers make a purchase they will be given a token which can be placed in the voting tube of their favourite charity.

The local projects will be supported by the UK charity Groundworks to get their projects up and running once the funding has been allocated.

Voting ends on Sunday, March 6.
